Ingredients of Macher Jhol Recipe
- Hilsa Fish - 1 Kg
- Onion - 150 gm
- Ginger - 1 Cup
- Garlic - 1 Cup
- Green chili - 2 Tablespoons
- Coriander powder - 2 Tablespoons
- Red chili powder - 1 Tablespoon
- Salt - 1 Teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1 Teaspoon
- Jaggery - 1 Cup
- Lemon - 1
- Mustard oil - 2 Tablespoons
- Fenugreek seeds - ½ Teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - ½ Teaspoon
- Whole red chilies - 4
How to Make Macher Jhol
Step 1: Clean and cut the fish into even pieces.
Step 2: Rub well the fish with a little salt and turmeric powder.
Step 3: Make a paste of onions, ginger, garlic and green chilli. Add coriander powder, red chilli paste and salt to the paste and mix them well.
Step 4: Heat the oil in a kadhai, add methi seeds, whole red chilli, mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
Step 5: As these spices start crackling, add the ground onions mixture and cook well.
Step 6: Add a little water, then put jaggery. Allow the gravy to simmer for about 5 minutes.
Step 7: Now, add the fish pieces and simmer until fish is cooked.
Step 8: Check for seasoning and serve hot garnished with lemon wedges.
