Handvo is all time favorite and the much-loved Gujarati snack dish. It is one of the excellent handva recipes during fasting days. This baked tasty cake is a treat for tea time, brunch or anytime. This delicious and pleasant cake is crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. It is made with an aromatic mix of yogurt, sago, potato, amaranth and water chestnut flours, peanuts and spiced with chili. Relish the flavors of farali handva with this easy recipe.
Ingredients of Farali Handvo Recipe
- Grated potato - 1 Cup
- Soaked sago - 1 Cup
- Amaranth flour - ½ Cup
- Chestnut flour - ½ Cup
- Peanut powder - 2 Tablespoons
- Yogurt - 1 Tablespoon
- Sugar - ½ Tablespoon
- Ginger-chilli paste - 1 Tablespoon
- Cinnamon-clove powder - ½ Teaspoon
- Red chilli powder - 1 Teaspoon
- Rock salt - 1 Teaspoon
- Oil - 3 Tablespoons
- Cumin seeds - ½ Teaspoon
- Curry leaves - 6
- Sesame seeds - 1 ½ Teaspoons
How to Make Farali Handvo
Step 1: In a large bowl, mix the grated potato, sago, amaranth flour, water chestnut flour, peanut powder, yogurt, ginger-chilli paste, cinnamon-clove powder, red chili powder, sugar and rock salt.
Step 2: Now, add water to it and form a batter of medium-thick consistency.
Step 3: Heat oil in a heavy bottom deep pan and add cumin seeds and sesame seeds. Allow them to crackle.
Step 4: Once they crackled add curry leaves and sauté it for few seconds then pour the prepared batter evenly to make a thick layer.
Step 5: Cover and cook on LOW heat till the base turns golden brown and crisp.
Step 6: Now, lift the handvo gently using two large flat spoons or spatula and turn it over to the other side.
Step 7: Cover and cook on another side till it turns golden brown and crisp on another side.
Step 8: Remove from the heat and allow it to cool a bit.
Step 9: Then cut it into pieces and serve immediately.
